New 24 Season Is Excellent

4:59 pm in Television

I have been enthralled by the new 24 season, which was most unexpected. I had never really gotten into 24 before this year’s episodes. I had watched some season one DVDs with some friends but never was taken in because it seemed to hook you and you weren’t satisfied with each episodes ending.

Now thanks to the 24: Redemption 2 hour episode which alluded to this years seventh season and set a back drop for the show I have been entranced by the writing and plots of each episode so far.

It gets so intense with Jack Bauer being brought in for war crimes, then having to help the FBI track down an unknown terrorist. With the great twist of Tony Almeida being behind the terror plots, I was hooked in from the start. Plus there is a genocidal war going on in Sengala at the same time as the new president being sworn in. You don’t know who to trust and anyone could be playing for the wrong side.

I like the new character Renee Walker, she has some depth and is interesting. Plus the actress playing her does a great job as well. Walker is an FBI agent who goes along with Bauer when things get tough. She even interrogates someone in the same style that Jack would choose. She has a strong personality but still has her feminine side. Her boss has feelings for her and let’s that get in the way of his judgment as he sees Bauer as a threat.

This season deals with torture and the ethical argument of whether it is appropriate to save lives. There is the argument that to get information from “terrorists” you have to use torture or they’ll just ask for lawyers and you’ll never get anything out of them. There is the other side that they are humans and have rights and should never be treated inhumanely. They must be first prosecuted and evidence must prove they’re guilty. After all, what if you torture someone who wasn’t involved in a terror plot, or was framed, or completely innocent. Plus you are giving the government too much power to torture whoever “they deem suspect,” and that is a dangerous tool to give them.

I just take the show for what it is worth, whether I disagree or agree with their political beliefs. It is a fast paced show with tons of actions and twists around every corner. Jack Bauer is one of the best TV characters of all time, and will be such for some time to come.

William “Jeff” Komlo Death

2:57 pm in News

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania authorities say a former NFL quarterback who failed to show for sentencing on drunken driving charges nearly four years ago has been killed in a car crash in Greece.

A Chester County detective says authorities had initially been skeptical about reports of William “Jeff” Komlo’s death in a weekend crash.

But acting chief county detective Jim Vito says the State Department used fingerprints to confirm the crash victim was indeed the 52-year-old fugitive.

In July 2005, Komlo failed to show for sentencing on two drunken driving convictions. He had also failed to show for an unrelated hearing two months earlier.

Komlo was also under investigation for fires at home in Pennsylvania and Florida.

Komlo played for the Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers between 1979 and 1983.

Walmart Gang Initiation

2:35 pm in News

There have been all sorts of rumors and internet hoaxes about a gang that is going to kill three women in a Walmart in a number of counties including ones near Memphis, Desoto, Broward and Palm Beach county. Some say it’s a Mexican gang targeting black women shopping at Target or Walmart. Others say they are targeting women and children. Basically none of the facts are consistent and the threat is not credible. The police have been bombarded with non sense calls and don’t need anymore of them.

“These hoaxes and urban legends have been around forever. Now with the Internet they seem to travel with lightning speed.” said Jim Leljadal, spokesman for the Broward Sheriff’s office.

Shameless Advertising In The Sports World

1:10 pm in Sports

Looking on the court of the Big East Tournament I was dismayed by what I saw. In big print letters on the court was an advertisement for Free Credit Report.com, I couldn’t believe it. Not even a reputable company like AT&T or Gatorade. That company has been known to do shady practices such as hiding the fact that they charge you $15 a month for you to see your credit score, so it’s not free at all.

I dread that this could become a big problem in the near future. You could see Nike, Verizon, Pepsi, Coca Cola, all sorts of shameless advertising right on the hard wood. I’m sure the advertisers were thinking what better ad spot than the court where players run back and fourth and the fans eyes are fixed on it the whole time.

Do we not have enough advertising between game breaks and right as we come back from break. The announcers even shamelessly promote TV shows from the same network during the game. They didn’t used to do that in the eighties and before. Heck, once I even saw Kobe drink a Sprite after winning the NBA Finals. Yeah, because Sprite really quenches your thirst, ludicrous! Sure Gatorade has carbs, but it also has lots of sugar and high fructose corn syrup to fatten you up. So the regular joe who drinks it has to work out like an NBA player just to stay in good shape. There really is not substitute for water, but there is vitamin water.

Nowadays you even have ads on the DVR menu screen. There are ads by the scorekeepers bench and the commentators. You know the banners next to the tournament logo where the players sub in to the game. There is plenty of advertising so we don’t need to ruin the reputation of the game by putting ad logos on the court. Eventually it might become like Nascar with ten different logos on the basketball court, how trashy would that look? Or are we going to have ad logos on the team’s jersey because the team owner is short on cash? Hopefully this was a one time event and the league doesn’t want to ruin it’s reputation by continuing down this road. Unfortunately usually in money deals with ad companies it is a slippery slope. Once you start giving out ad spots you rarely go back and remove them.

The Guild 2: Highly Addictive

3:01 pm in Gaming

“The Guild 2″ is a game that has every aspect you could want in a game. If you are okay with a long tutorial and learning a lot of features, you will thoroughly enjoy this PC game. It has elements from The Sims, Pirates, Dynasties, Law and Order, Politics and other cool concepts. Besides that, the graphics are awesome to top it off.

You design your character and choose his starting stats that build up with experience. This is typical of most rpgs(role playing games). You can be a craftsman, rogue, scholar or patron. Their is 3-5 subclasses in those categories depending on who you pick. Such as miners, woodcutters or black smithy. You can hire employees to help your business (rogues can hire thugs, patrons hire servants). This is highly immersive as their is real time economy in the game. You mine the iron, sell it in market, then a smith can buy it, make something and sell that item (armor, swords, etc.) in the market. Then the computer or real player can store it in his house or carry it. A rogue can then go to his house and steal it. So an item is never lost unless a character dies. He can even pass his items on to his children if he is of old age. Plus the prices in the market fluctuate depending on supply. You can make money just from buying and selling in various markets.

The game is multiplayer as well, online or network which makes it really enjoyable. You can compete in the markets or in elections. Vie for the city mayor or accuse each other of crimes in court. Or you can ally and try to take out the other computer guilds. Their are multiple cities in each map and tons of room to run your own city and show it off to your friend in game. You can even move different characters in your dynasty from town to town. So if you get bored of one town you can switch towns.

There are also titles in the game, you can go from commoner to baronet. You also pass your titles down to your children, so your dynasty can prosper. There is also a feature where your children take the attributes of you and your wife. So their stats will be good if you and your wife have great stats. You can control three people from your dynasty. This leaves plenty of room to have variety and keep things interesting. Since each character can’t change classes, you can have your wife and son be two different classes or you can specialize on one skill and refine it throughout generations, so your kids can be born with a mastery of skills in that craft.

Freenapkin.com

1:01 pm in News

I found this great site, Free Napkin (freenapkin.com) where you can get all sorts of stuff in your local area for free. People post stuff they are trying to get rid of and the first person to claim the item gets it. There is no catch, everything is free on the site. There are items ranging from speakers, lamps, dryers, even dogs! All you have to do is sign up for the site and claim the item you want. I believe you might have to pick it up yourself though because the giver won’t want to pay for shipping on an item that’s not making them a profit. There is some really great stuff, so check it out today!

Don Imus Says He Has Prostate Cancer

12:28 pm in News

(AP) NEW YORK – Don Imus said he has prostate cancer, but the radio personality expressed confidence in a full recovery.

Imus, 68, made the announcement Monday on his morning show from New York, which airs on ABC Radio Networks and cable’s RFD-TV. He said he wrestled with the idea of making it public, but figured he should because he might have to miss some work due to treatment.

“I’m changing the name of the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer to the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with cancer and me,” he said, referring to his charity to help children with cancer.

Imus said he has early stage cancer, which means it hasn’t spread outside the prostate.

A one-time shock jock who now does a show heavy on the media and politics, Imus was fired by CBS Radio and MSNBC in spring 2007 for a racial slur of the Rutgers women’s basketball team. He later apologized. He’s built his radio network back to the level it was before the incident, although his influence has waned.

Imus said he was surprised more than anything about the diagnosis, since he’s been focused on following a healthy diet for the past decade.

He noted that doctors seemed reluctant to talk about one of his big worries: What prostate cancer treatment will mean for his sex life.
